Yoni Life: Exploring the Divine Feminine

About a month ago I was starting a yoga class and a woman got off her mat, walked across the room, leaned in close to me and asked if I could take my mask off while teaching. She exclaimed that the week before I taught in my mask, and it stressed her out because it was such a “pandemic thing”. My immediate reaction-outside of being completely taken aback-was to grab my belly. I am currently expecting and about seven months along. Womb wellness came to mind immediately, and I was disappointed in her lack of empathy for not only me, but the world in general.

What comes to mind when you think about womb wellness? My definition has definitely changed in the last seven months. Prior to that, it was more so about uplifting the root chakra, Maintaining a good pH balance and making sure that my yearly exams came back with healthy results. I became familiar with yoni steams a few years ago at  a Korean spa, and it started as a fun activity with girlfriends from time to time. Considering menstruation, sexual intercourse, and childbirth, the vagina withstands a lot. Then add hormones and pelvic floor issues to the mix, sometimes that area can be anything but comfortable. Vaginal steaming is an age-old natural remedy said to cleanse the yoni (vagina and uterus), regulate menstruation, and even ease period cramps and bloating. The service directs herb-infused steam into the area. The herbs can be catered to specific needs . It can also be done at home, but spas and centers, like the Laya Center,  offer a special seat or throne to aid the process.

For me, the relationship with my yoni started to change when I found out that I had fibroids in 2020.  Did you know that about 80% of women have fibroids, or non-cancerous growths that develop from the muscle tissue of the uterus? Unfortunately, African-American women suffer more from this ailment than other populations . Once I found out this information relative to my own health, it was a bit devastating for me. The fibroids lined my uterine wall, and were the reason that I had not gotten pregnant to date although I was approaching 40 fast. The fibroids were so large that they were blocking the sperm from reaching the egg.

I discovered that I needed a surgery, and not a simple surgery. After meeting with Western doctors I turned to the Laya Center to get not only a holistic way to deal with this issue, but a path for overall wellness as I move forward and heal through this difficult journey. I got a series of tonics and herbs to slow the growth and ease the situation as much as possible. But the fibroids were too big to turn back. Had to opt for a myomectomy, which would require a C-section scar although I would not have a child. The surgeon extracted 11 fibroids from my uterus. Four of them were golf ball size.

During this entire process, my overall view on womb wellness changed dramatically. I started to educate others about a situation that was way more common than I thought before. My experience definitely became helpful for many people in the community around me. It was humbling to share and be a voice for many women suffering in silence with the same issues. During this difficult time, the Laya Center also proved to be a great resource for holistic health and wellness before, during and after the process. It is always necessary to combine Western recommendations with Eastern ancient practice to find balance for modern health. This is when I started to contemplate the term Womb-an. The essence of creation and foundation of Matriarchs all over the globe!

Yoni wellness is also about being strategic about who you let into your physical yoni space-but that's a whole different blog entry. My transformation started with that realization and continued to deeper things. The yoni steam was the root. Whatever your relationship is in the current moment with your yoni, embrace opportunities to find evolution in everyday life. Fibroids and other conditions concentrated on the uterus can feel overwhelming. When certain things happen, it is necessary to find new ways to heal your body, mind, spirit and push forward. Following the path that the ancestors carved for us can definitely provide solace.

We have a local treasure in the Laya Center. There is opportunity to experience a yoni steam and enjoy a cup of tea. If necessary, you can pair with the internal remedies necessary for maintaining holistic health. Whether it is a tonic, herb or a cleanse, there are experts available to provide educational expansion of mind. You can even get a custom steam to take home and do on your own. Getting older is inevitable. Use the opportunity to grow your femininity and love for self. Experience health and wellness in a whole new way!
